Gardening – Therapy for the Soul

Do you find yourself stressed or depressed? Does your life seem to be spinning faster than the earth itself? Well the answer to your problems may be found in the latter. That’s right, earth: good old-fashioned dirt. There’s something about getting your hands dirty, nurturing your plants from start to finish and finally reaching your reward at harvest time that seems to slow the world around you. Julia Darnton, and Lauren McGuire with the Michigan State University Extension go as far as to say “Gardening can reduce stress and mental clarity while also helping to prevent everything from coronary disease to colon cancer”. Whether you garden in a one-acre plot or a one-gallon pot, don’t be surprised to notice your stress level lowering one tomato at a time. What other ways do you find helpful for relieving stress?
